| 8.0 Other Information
A very good GRE score is not all
and at the same time and poor score is not going to
keep you out. There are other facts like your SOP and
UG grades that also play a crucial part. But a good
GRE score is an added advantage, because this is the
only standardized way to compare a student with the
rest of the students who apply [Percentile in each section
is given in the score report indicating where the student
stands among other test takes]. Moreover, the grading
system varies from country to country and cannot be
considered a standardized measure to compare.
8.2 How should I register for the
tests in case I have more than one name?
Make sure the same name, spelling
appears on GRE/GMAT, TOEFL and Passport. For example
if a person's name is Julia Anna Roberts then her first
/given name is Julia, middle name is Anna and last /
family / Surname is Roberts. Lets take another name,
say W X Y Z - the fist name could be W-X or just W and
the middle could be X or Y or X-Y and last Y-Z or Z.
Hence the name combinations in the order of first middle
& last are W-X Y Z, W X-Y Z, W X Y-Z. Stick on to
just one format for all tests, because at the test center
only spelling corrections could be made and swapping
of middle or last name is not allowed. Make sure the
name appears the same on your passport.
Confusion in name could lead to great
difficulties. At the office of admission it would be
difficult for them to identify your transcripts/score
reports and you may not be admitted because of these
misconceptions. As far as possible try to expand all
the initials, if this is not possible write an detailed
letter and attach it along with your application as
how you name appears on each and every score report,
official transcripts (UG attested mark sheets), letters
of recommendations, financial statement etc. - this
makes their task easy and eliminates any possibility
of error in processing of your details.
8.3 A note on American People
Americans are frank and outspoken.
They voice their opinions and share their views on a
variety of subjects. In general, they appreciate people
who are candid. There are few subjects an American will
not discuss. Of course, there are exceptions, and religious
values may keep some from discussing certain issues.
Those who are not close friends avoid extremely personal
questions. Americans value innovation, industry and
integrity. They enjoy a good sense of humor, including
sarcasm. Americans have the ability to laugh at themselves
as well as others. Even though they may criticize the
government, most are patriots and believe the United
States is one of the greatest countries in the world.
They strongly value their freedom and independence,
both as a nation and as individuals. Individualism,
as opposed to conformity, is often cited as an American
characteristic. Even when working as a team, Americans
usually think in terms of several distinct individuals
blending their efforts rather than a group working as
one unit. |
